Lucy Harbin Took An Axe And Gave Her Husband Forty Whacks!

Lucy Harbin Took An Axe And Gave Her Husband Forty Whacks!

So, who doesn’t like a good review?  And when I got one, I went to town.  I premiered “Strait Jacket” starring Joan Crawford in NYC and Dorothy Kilgallen wrote a wonderful review.  Dorothy herself was quite an interesting person—one-third serious headline reporter, one-third gossip columnist and of course the last third television game show panelist for “What’s My Line?”

I will never forget her words.

“Joan Crawford’s new movie, which was sneak-previewed the other night, is the wildest suspend-and-gore mystery ever filmed. Titled “Strait Jacket,” it makes Alfred Hitchock’s “Psycho,” (or any other picture you can name) seem like a Walt Disney fairy tale.  Strong men were leaving the mezzanine and fairly strong ladies were holding their hands in front of their faces, peeking between fingers…”

In fact her words made such an impact on me I threw an axe straight at the paper and then sent it to all the trade magazines.  I wanted everyone to know that “The Voice of Broadway” thought my film scarier than any of Hitch’s. My goodness, his were compared to a Walt Disney fairy tale.   (I know this wasn’t true but I loved it just the same!)

Boy, I needed to feel like I was a contender.  I see that now.  I didn’t realize you were all out there and would remember me after all these years.

I think for Halloween I am going to dress up as Lucy Harbin—eyebrows, charm bracelets, lipstick, modest little dress and of course the axe!

Can I dead man trick or treat?  I know I can pull some pretty intense tricks but what if I’m in the mood for some treats? Will you give them to a dead man if he promises to sing:

“Lucy Harbin took an Axe and gave her husband forty whacks…”

I love that little tune.  Set the right ambiance.  Don’t you think?  That and a bottle of Pepsi.

(While at The Film Forum last month I received a package with a new book about Joan Crawford entitled, “Just Joan.”  It is written by Donna Marie Nowak. If you love Joan, you’ll love this book.)

Thanks, Mr. Castle, for mentioning my book, JUST JOAN! Woo hoo! I’d agree with Dorothy Kilgallen that “Strait-Jacket” was wild (in the best way)!!! Wonder what that 25 cent sale was about (in last photo)…

      My pleasure. Great work!
