Blood and Ink and Indelible Impressions

Blood and Ink and Indelible Impressions

The tributes are making me blush, but I must say, after such a delightful poem, I was shocked to find this little goody waiting for me.

It has been a surprising October to say the least.

Amy Voorhees Searles inked my logo into her delicate skin.  Just above the anklebone.

Now, I remember placing my logo on martini glasses and cocktail napkins but this classy lady has given new meaning to the word Macabre.

I sit forever on her ankle for the world to see. Engraved in ink and blood.

I feel immortal.  Brought back “From the Grave!” by all of you who have demanded my reemergence.

Why?  I’m just a dead man who made films a half century ago?

What chord did I strike within each of you?

I took the liberty of asking Ms. Amy Searles why she chose my logo to ink into her subtle skin.  She gave me an answer that floored me.  Articulate, thoughtful and creative, her answer made me feel as proud as I’ve ever felt.

“The short, simple answer is that I’m a long-time William Castle fan. STRAIT-JACKET, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and THE TINGLER have been among my favorite films for more than two decades (that may not sound impressive but, for context, I’m 28).

The lengthier, more sentimental answer is that my father grew up with Castle horror films and loved to share both the films and his fond recollections of these colorful movie-going experiences with his young daughter (Though we did encounter a bit of a false start – when I was 5 or 6 years old he tried to show me 13 GHOSTS, but I found the illustrated ghosts from the opening titles far too frightening and fled the room! It was at least two years until I was able to watch the film in its entirety. As an adult I’m a resolute horror fan with a voracious appetite for genre films of all stripes…which is probably why my father still takes special joy in taunting me about my youthful lily-liveredness!).

The final (and perhaps most tangential) answer is that I’ve always felt inspired by William Castle’s work. The films and their promotion (which indeed feel like a single animal for most projects) seem to have been approached with unrivaled inventiveness, a genuine sense of enthusiasm and a tongue lodged firmly in cheek. I can only hope that this tattoo reminds me to approach my life in the same fashion.”

Thank you Ms. Amy Voorhees Searles from the bottom of my heart to the top of your ankle.

What a great image, you at the candy counter. I don’t blame you. I’m off to watch House on Haunted Hill with an audience tonight. I’ll let you know how it goes.

  2. Such a touching tribute.

From my awesome experiences at the Film Forum, finally being able to experience “Emerg-o”, “Percepto” vote in the punishment poll and laugh at the cowards to now having my own small part in “Scare it Forward”. Add to that the “encounter” on the Houston Street subway station.

It has been my honor to do what I can to keep a man who brought me so much enjoyment alive in what way I can.
